The NORM-PKP system features the DSM-525 Scaler / Ratemeter connected to a Geiger-Mueller Pancake Probe for counts, and the MRSP-1 Plastic Scintillation probe for gamma dose (uR/hr or uSv/hr). The combination of the two probes is ideal for measuring NORM and TENORM radiation. The MRSP-1 Plastic Scintillation probe offers a near flat energy response. This significantly reduces over-response to lower energy gammas, resulting in more accurate measurements, and few false alarms. Other detectors, such as Sodium Iodide, dramatically over-respond to low energy gamma. The pancake G-M and plastic scintillation probes are simultaneously connected to the instrument. The user can easily switch between them, without having to power the instrument down. The DSM-525 features an oversized, auto-ranging digital display that indicates counts, dose, display error indications, and audible/visual alarms. The scaler function allows the user to accumulate counts over a given period of time. Scaler interval is user user adjustable. The efficiencies of the pancake G-M detector for the following isotopes are approximately: 5% for Carbon-14; 22% for Strontium-90/Yttrium-90; 19% for Technetium-99; 32% for Phosphorus-32; 15% for Plutonium-239.
Notes: NORM is an acronym for Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material. TENORM is an acronym for Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material resulting from human activity that has concentrated the radioactive exposure by making the radioactive material more accessible to human contact.
